More than ten thousand people crowded in a theatre hall in Bucharest to watch the annual Miss Gypsy pageant.

The colourful event is somewhat of a tradition in Bucharest and it is keenly contested.

The winner enjoying the adulation of thousands and the title of Miss Gypsy 1999.

Its not exactly the Miss World contest.

But, what the event lacks in glitter, glamour and TV lights, it makes up for with traditional dancing.

After a lengthy selection process it was down to the last couple of girls.

From the six final contestants, the winner was a 22-year-old girl from Bucharest.

The happy winner could barely contain her excitement.

Although she takes an active part in the traditions of the gypsy community, Stefania "Fila" Ciolacu dreams to be integrated into Romanian society.

She has graduated from high school and hopes to go to college one day soon.

Miss Gypsy receives a US$1000 prize, while second and third place finishers receive 700 and 500 dollars respectively.

Romania has a gypsy community of about two and a half million, the biggest in Europe.

Stefania "Fila" Ciolacu maybe this years Queen but for the other contestants there is always next year.
