In this case, Detective George Campos stopped a vehicle and almost immediately called for a K-9 unit after noting the driver’s nervous behavior and partially lowered window. While Campos struggled to run warrant checks, a beat officer assisted and marijuana was found on one passenger. The K-9 arrived within minutes, allegedly alerted on the car, and a firearm was discovered under the driver’s seat. However, a judge later ruled the stop was unlawfully prolonged and suppressed the evidence, finding no reasonable suspicion to detain or search the occupants. The investigator reviewing the case disagreed, arguing the judge’s summary misrepresented key facts and ignored testimony showing Campos called for the K-9 early and acted within training that allows removing occupants for safety. Missing and deleted body-cam footage complicated the review, but the investigator ultimately recommended Campos be exonerated of policy violations, concluding his actions were reasonable under department procedures.
