Description:

A slow, contemplative, coming-of-age short film that tackles the themes of purpose, insecurity amongst our peers, and the crippling expectations we hold ourselves to. The film showcases a young woman after graduating, and how she struggles to hold on to the one thing that gave her life meaning.


Director's Statement:

The idea for this film came from the pressure I felt in making this very thesis film. One of the things our professors love to repeat over and over again is that “your thesis will be your calling card into the industry,” and that has snowballed and cemented into me an immeasurable level of pressure, gravity, and importance. I know that I will not ever have the same support and access to resources that I do with this thesis film; that means that if I don’t do well here, then I won’t again get the chance to make more short films just like it; and if I won’t have more short films to show for myself, then I will never make it as the filmmaker I can finally be proud of. My career is already on the line before it’s even started. I know how contrived, self-imposed, and ridiculous this line of reasoning is, but I am nonetheless lethargic with the fear of living a life that amounts to nothing. That wouldn’t be living, that would be killing time.

An alarming number of my friends, as well as the general discourse of the youth online, seem to echo these same fears and worries that have been stirring in my mind for years. These are the fears of people who thought they knew what they wanted but don’t, people who were never good enough, people who never had an opportunity, and people who never knew who they should be. This is the story of my generation; we are scared stiff of the probable future; of who we will be, of how we will be.

We are all searching for a version of ourselves we can be happy with. We are all, in one way or another, lost.
