In a major milestone for India’s Kuno National Park, five new cheetah cubs were born, following Namibian cheetah Jwala delivering her third litter under the ambitious Project Cheetah. The births on March 9, 2026, raise India’s cheetah population to 53, surpassing the half-century mark for the first time. Veterinary teams and field staff closely monitored the cubs inside Kuno’s protected habitat. With this litter, Indian-born cheetahs reach 33, marking the tenth successful litter on Indian soil since the translocation programme began. Officials hailed the development as a significant boost to conservation efforts, aiming to re-establish a sustainable population of the world’s fastest land animal in India, extinct since 1952.
