Watermelon is a warm season crop grown when soil temperature reaches 70 degrees and air temperatures are between 70 - 90 degrees. They like well drained and organic rich soil with a PH level between 6 - 6.8 .
Watermelon requires 1 -2 inches of water a week.
Requires a fertilizer ratio of 5-10-10 . You want to side dress the plant once the vines start taking off. Make sure to have your soil tested so you know what you are working with. If you have too much nitrogen, all you will be growing are leafs and vines.
Common Pests: the cucumber beetle, mites, and aphids.
Common Diseases: Powdery Mildew, Fusarium Wilt, and Gummy Stem Blight.
On average, a watermelon takes 90 days from planting to harvesting.
How to tell if a watermelon is ripe. Look at the tendril adjacent to the stem of the melon, if it's brown and dry, the watermelon is ready to pick. There is also a small spoon like leaf where the stem and vine meet, if that is brown, the watermelon is ready to pick.
