___
This decorative ewer takes the form of a mythical bird known in Chinese as a fenghuang, called a phoenix in Western cultures. It possesses the head and body of a pheasant, the tail and curved beak of a parrot, and the long neck and legs of a crane. Over time, it became a symbol of the empress.
Rare Chinese porcelains, like this ewer, served as diplomatic gifts among European rulers. The Taft’s vessel may be one of two phoenix-shaped ewers that once belonged to the Medici family, who ruled Florence during the Renaissance. This makes it an object of great historical importance. Around 1600, its new owner commissioned a goldsmith to add precious metal mounts to the base and handle, elevating its status as a luxury item.
