I Call it Wyndham

Hair like a black bird
face like a scream
he came from the earth
not some perfect dream
now he's blinking in the hospital light
all he knew till then was the comfort of night
now it's needles and pins
water burns his skin
he's got a bottomless hole
where the milk goes in
He's growing but he's not growing fast
Then I look and see the milestones pass

They call it a blessing
they call it a delight
to witness such a small soul climb ever higher heights
I call it a challenge
nobody can win
I call it Wyndham
that's what I call him

Voice like a tiger
legs like a faun
toddles through the clover and weeds of the lawn
holds my hand like he'll never let go
hard to believe he'll ever walk on his own
but now he runs in the playground
runs in the hall
runs away from his parents when his parents call
he's running though he's not running fast
The milestones continue to pass

They call it important
they call it matter of fact
to teach such a growing soul with intention and tact
I call it mostly a need
to have a soft place to fall
I call it Wyndham
That's what he is called

They call it a vocation
the most important of all
they call it a failure when those who call it think your dropping the ball
I call it making me laugh
when the world is sad
I call it Wyndham
and he calls me dad
