The most tricky point on top-down sweaters is at the underarms, where you often get large holes at the point where you pick up stitches.
There are several remedies - I often use a combination of these, since one is often not enough:
Use the yarn end to close the hole when weaving in the ends.
Pick up more stitches than required and knit them together.
Pick up stitches one row below.
The little trick shown in the video: Pick up the stitch next to the one you are knitting and lift it on to the needle with the “wrong” leg in front. Knit these two together. The loop you picked up will lie underneath and will be twisted, thus covering the gap and pulling the yarn tighter.
