Each ball was dropped from 60 inches. The hight of the ball after the first bounce was found by using the measuring tape that was placed on the wall.
The final heights were found to be:
Basketball: 36in.
Soccer Ball: 34in.
Tennis Ball: 32in.
Golf Ball: 38in.
Using these heights the coeffecients of restitution were found using the equation:
e= sqrt(bounce height/drop height)
This equation is ignoring friction so that the result is essential a comparison between potential energies.
The coefficients of restitution were found to be:
Basketball: 0.7746
Soccer Ball: 0.7528
Tennis Ball: 0.7303
Golf Ball: 0.7958
You will notice that non of the values were greater then 1. This is due to the fact that energy is dissipated when the ball hits the ground.
