Today, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) gathered at the PFBC’s Fort Hunter Access along the Susquehanna River in Dauphin County to advise the public about the dangers of venturing out onto the frozen surface of rivers other moving waters that have become frozen this winter.
Whenever a thick crust of ice forms on the river and other moving waters, the phenomenon attracts curious onlookers wishing to see the ice up close, and there is a temptation to walk onto the ice.
Unlike lakes and ponds which, when frozen with a thick layer of ice, can produce recreational opportunities such as ice fishing and skating, moving bodies of water such as rivers and streams are never safe to walk on. With rapid current flowing beneath the ice, the frozen surface remains unstable and treacherous.
A fall into frigid water can cause rapid hypothermia, inhalation of water, and can lead to drowning. Emergencies involving victims who have walked onto the frozen river also put first responders at risk during rescues.
For information on approved ice recreation, including ice fishing, on non-moving waters such as lakes and ponds, visit the PFBC Website: https://www.pa.gov/agencies/fishandbo...
