The challenges and opportunities of collating a clear picture of historical hurricane activity.
Hurricanes are arguably the single largest extreme weather event that impacts human society today as the over 1,500 lives lost during Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi and damages of about $125 billion from Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Louisiana.
A high-quality database of historical hurricane activity is crucial for studies of importance to the general public, the business community, governmental groups, and emergency managers. The Atlantic basin hurricane database - HURDAT for short - currently extends back from present to 1851. However, this cornerstone database contains many systematic and random errors that need to be corrected.
This conversation, hosted by Oasis and the Lighthill Risk Network demonstrates how this process has been done with specific detail taken from 1974 to demonstrate the value and benefits of this important data.
