The tower, otherwise known as the Supine Groin Progressive stretch or the Egoscue Tower, is one of the most important exercises in all of Egoscue postural therapy. It can be included in a program for a wide range of pains and misalignments. It is a primary tool to restore postural integrity.
The tower restores proper length and tension to the muscles of the hip. It promotes proper flexion and extension in the hip, while negating rotations and misalignments. Muscles shortened from frequent sitting are reset to their proper length. Hyperextension (lordosis) in the lower back is often relieved, as is excessive mid/upper back curve (kyphosis).
The tower may be effective for hip pain, sciatica, degenerative hip, hip bursitis, back pain, bulging discs, herniated disc, scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, neck pain, headaches, lordosis, kyphosis, knee pain, and many other conditions and misalignments.
*note on duration at each level - often this exercise is programmed at 5 minutes per level.
You can also take note of when your lower back relaxes into the floor.
Another effective method is the
THIGH TEST: when you begin at a level, squeeze your thigh for a couple of seconds. You will probably notice that the 'centre of contraction' feels like its lower down the quad towards the knee. Relax and let the position do its work.
After a few minutes, squeeze your thigh again. You will feel it move up the leg to the mid thigh. Continue the position.
Then, repeat the squeeze, and eventually you will notice the 'centre of the contraction' has moved to the centre upper thigh. This may take 3-5 mins. In some cases this could take 10 mins or longer.
Pain is a message from your body. The message is -- this way of moving doesn't work. You have deviated too far from functional operation. You can put your body through all sorts of hoops. But ultimately you should look to return to a place of relative alignment. To achieve this, we must consider the body holistically and its kinetic chains - "The foot bone's connected to the ankle bone, the ankle bone connected to the leg bone" etc. The site of the pain is rarely the site of the problem. E.g. the source of your shoulder pain may be your hip etc. The tower can be a big step to restoring functional movement, and a pain free body.
