(23 Jun 2014) Shiite Muslims in Iraq swore on Monday to defend their holy shrines against attacks from Sunni militants fighting for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Outside the holy shrine of Imam al-Kadhim, in Baghdad's northern Kazimiyah neighbourhood, a local Imam said that the shrines in the country would be protected and that militants who have taken large swathes of the country will be expelled.
Karbala, south of Baghdad, is home to the holy shrine of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed.
Sheikh Raad al-Ka'bi, the Imam of Ali mosque in Kabala, insisted that Sunni militants would be unable to reach any of the holy Shiite shrines.
"There are huge numbers of troops whom they are ready to fight them and defeat them. And territories of the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala will be a graveyard for them," he said.
Iraqi analyst Hadi Jalu warned on Monday that should ISIL damage shrines in Najaf, Karbala, Baghdad and Samarra "a comprehensive war and a process of annihilation" would result, amid an inevitable Shiite backlash.
In February 2006, a huge explosion destroyed the Askariya shrine's golden dome in Samarra and ignited fierce fighting between Sunnis and Shiites that killed tens of thousands of people across Iraq and pushed the country to the brink of civil war.
