The capital city of Mali, Bamako, is currently facing a severe crisis due to a fuel blockade imposed by Islamist rebels. These groups have attacked fuel convoys, making it extremely difficult to get supplies into the city and leaving pumps dry. This situation has led to warnings that Mali's military government, which has been in power since 2021, could collapse within weeks or months.
This unfolding situation is particularly challenging for Russia, whose strategy in West Africa is now under scrutiny. Russia stepped in to offer support after France, the former colonial power, withdrew its forces from the region. The rebels, identified as the al-Qaida-linked group JNIM, have steadily gained ground over several years and are now at the city's doorstep. They could choose to attack or simply wait for the government to yield.
The roots of this instability trace back to the fall of Muammar Khaddafi in Libya in 2011, which led to a flood of weapons across the region and empowered various Islamist groups. France's earlier intervention in Mali was eventually followed by its withdrawal, particularly after a military coup brought the current junta to power. The junta then sought new alliances with Russia, employing private military groups like the Wagner army (now "Afrikakåren").
This crisis extends beyond Mali's borders. Intelligence officials have warned that the region is becoming a focal point for global terrorism, posing a direct threat to Europe. If these nations were to fall under complete Islamist control, it could have significant and far-reaching consequences for international security. According to Aftonbladet.
