If we have some intervention from OPEC, the price might creep up to $60, if there is no intervention from OPEC there is nothing to prevent the oil price from sliding down to $40 or $45 which would be the optimal price for a number of shale producers. Irrespective of interventions we are probably stuck in the $40 to $60 range for the foreseeable future. Also, if the markets start believing that the Chinese are cutting back, speculators will start betting on further declines in the oil price.
