Fifty people were killed and many others injured when a train ran into a crowd celebrating Dussehra in Punjab’s Joda Phatak, close to Amritsar, subdivisional magistrate Rajesh Sharma said.
The crowd was watching a Ravana effigy burn nearby around 7pm, additional district commissioner of police, city-2, Lakhbir Singh said.
Some were standing on the track shooting videos of the effigy burning on their mobile phones when the train hit them.
