South Korean senior citizens living with their spouses are more satisfied with their lives than those living alone or with their children.
This is according to a set of surveys released on Tuesday by Statistics Korea on trends in Korean society.
In 2020 on the life satisfaction of people aged 65 and older by household type,
nearly 53% of respondents who live with their spouses say they are satisfied with their lives.
Those living with children followed at 47-point-3 percent.
While a little under 43 percent of those living alone said they were satisfied.
Married couples 65 and older showed higher satisfaction in different aspects of their lives including health as well as their relationship with children and friends.
Another survey suggests that Koreans are getting more satisfied with their lives.
In 2013, the life satisfaction score of Koreans was 5-point-7 out of 10.
It inched up to 6-point-1 in 2018 and to 6-point-3.. last year.
However, this is still lower than the OECD average of 7-point-6.
When it comes to the happiness index, South Korea scored 5-point-9-4 out of 10, to rank as the 59th happiest country in the world.
It's much lower than the U.S. in 16th, and Japan in 54th.
Meanwhile when it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic,
over half of South Koreans believe that the pandemic will become a perpetual phenomenon.
And only less than one-fifth of the total respondents believed that the pandemic will end at some point.
As for the level of people's return to pre-pandemic normalcy, South Koreans on average gave a score of 61-point-4 points out of 100.
Of them, people in the low-income brackets with a monthly income of 2 million won or less gave an average score of under 50.
