Sampling is a musical technique that dates back to the 1940s. As it crossed over to America, it became a staple in hiphop. All of the hiphop greats including Tupac, Ice Cube, NWA, Dr. Dre, Public Enemy, Biggie, and A Tribe Called Quest use several samples in their discography. More modern rap artists like Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Jay-Z, and Kanye West have been praised for the creativity in their music, a lot of which uses samples. Kanye used several samples on his debut album, the College Dropout, and on Watch the Throne, his joint album with Jay-Z. Several pop and R&B artists including Beyonce, Destiny's Child, Lady Gaga Mariah Carey, Madonna, and Rihanna. Samples only became more popular in the 2000s and 2010s. All of today's biggest artists use samples in their music. Some, like Cardi B in I Like it use it to pay homage to their roots. Others like Nicki Minaj use samples to make anthems like Anaconda and Super Freaky Girl. Several songs that have gone viral on social media like Jack Harlow's First Class, Ice Spice's Bikini Bottom, and Saucy Santana's Booty all contain samples. And let's not forget an iconic moment from last year, when Latto and Mariah Carey teamed up on the Big Energy Remix. They both sampled the same song from the 80s, which Mariah used in the 90s for fantasy. All in all, when it's done right, sampling is a valid artform, part of the culture of music, and a perfect way to acknowledge artists who've paved the way.
