The different models of disability show the different ways that people think about disability. The two main ones are the medical model of Disability and the social model of disability.

Sadly the model that most people have been taught is the medical model of disability. In this model we see disability as a problem which needs to be fixed.

The social model is definitely the preferred way of thinking as it shows that it's society's attitudes and infrastructure that needs to change in order to make the world more accessible for everyone, not just disabled people.

Let's take these stairs for example. As a wheelchair user I can't get up the stairs. Under the medical model of disability, my disability would be seen as the problem and I'd be expected to do hundreds of different things to try and make it up the stairs which realistically isn't going to change anything. In the social model however it would recognise that not everyone can use stairs and that the infrastructure needs to change so that disabled people, elderly people, people with trolleys, luggage or buggies can get up and down safely and easily so they put in a ramp to make the situation more accessible for everyone.
