Plano-Convex bricks were common in the Early Dynastic Period of Mesopotamia, from about 2900-2350BCE. They were flat on the bottom and domed on the top, like a loaf of bread. Seems an odd shape for a brick, but with enough mortar they make for stable walls. We aren't sure why they were made in this shape, but they are characteristic of an early period in the history of cities. With the expert help of Prof. Augusta McMahon and architect Marc Marin Webb, I talk about one of these bricks that we found on our current excavations at the ancient city of Lagash.
