I encourage all of my students to learn to read music, because reading is the key in understanding how music really works. It allows you to compare your playing with other instruments such as piano or maybe a flute, since these instruments are generally written down in standard notation. Thus you can find out how your part relates to the piano-part or the vocals.
Also it provides a visual conception of the melody and rhythm, so you can create a mental foresight of the things you want to play without the need to have an instrument at one's fingertips.
If I have to recollect a tune, I haven't played for a long time, I only have to take a look at the sheet music and immediately can remember how the bassline sounds, without even touching the instrument. You can never do this with a tab.

A good way in learning how to read is to play "easy" songs from sheet music. For this purpose I'll upload a bunch of easy to read tunes in standard notation. Try to play along!
