This is the video you want to watch if you want to dramatically improve the sound quality from your Mini Cooper (or Clubman or other variants) sound system. The basic Mini sound system uses front door speakers that are simply paper cone style, with small(ish) magnets and poor power handling capability. The sound system itself is relatively modest, with 15 watts per channel, but with the right speakers, that can produce surprisingly good sound quality.
My video shows you how to mount the new (much better) lower and upper front door speakers, as well as how to identify the polarity of the wiring so you can hook up the speakers correctly (it really makes a huge difference). I show you how I modified the mounting bracket for the mid-bass (lower) speaker to allow it to fit.
I also use an orange noise generator and a spectrum analyzer to provide an accurate way to compare the old speakers to the new speakers (the result is fairly dramatic, especially in the high frequencies, which essentially didn't exist before making the upgrade). While the low frequencies from the old lower "mid-bass" speaker were about the same loudness in the test, the sound QUALITY was dramatically different - the old "woofers" sounded hollow and over-stressed while the new ones are tight and controlled.
This isn't a "high end" transformation, but an example of how you can get a big improvement in sound quality without breaking the bank, or devoting a ridiculous amount of time to the job. Yes, if you need to startle people a block away with your sound system, you're going to have to spend a lot more money and give up things like your back seat... or if you want to get the absolute cleanest, clearest audio (a relative term in ANY car stereo) you're going to have to pay a lot for the right high-end drivers, amps, processors, etc. But if you're just looking for a big boost in your system for chump change, you've come to the right place.
FYI, the speakers I installed:
Mid-bass (lower front door): Rockville RM64PRO 6.5"
High-end (upper front door): Rockville RV35.3A 3.5" 3-way
With the new speakers, I can increase the bass level of the system without distortion and buzzing, and the modest output of the stock head unit is easily able to deliver the power I need for my listening. It even makes talk radio sound a LOT better!
If this video helps you out, I'd appreciate it very much if you would like the video and consider subscribing to my channel, making it easy for you to find other relevant videos (current and future), and to help me continue to make videos to help the DIY wrench-twisters.
Thanks!
