In South Africa, transport currently accounts for 10,8% of the country's total Greenhouse Gases (CHG), of which 91,2% is from road transport. Aim, from now, to convert 5% of the public and national sector fleet in the first five years to cleaner alternative fuel and efficient technologies vehicles, ideally powered through renewable energy. The Department has been collaborating with car manufacturers such as Toyota, BMW, Nissan, and Sasol to promote efficient vehicle technologies such as hybrid and electric vehicles
GTS is undergoing a public awareness campaign in provinces to align to the notion of green mobility and to raise awareness of technologies available to promote and enable change to less carbon-intensive mobility. 41% of SANs use taxis. That's a sector that needs to buy in. "Last month, reports emerged that the Department of Trade and Industry was opposed to reducing protection on the import of electric vehicles as a way of increasing domestic demand. The department's director of the automotive unit, Tinyiko Mafuwane, was quoted as stating that the government viewed electric vehicles as a future industrialisation opportunity and a level of protection would be necessary to ensure the viability of any local manufacturing of electric vehicles."
