In this video, I take you inside this massive underground structure and explore its historical importance in Taiwan’s military defense.

This is the largest military fortification in Kinmen. During the height of cross-strait tensions, tunnels like this were Kinmen’s lifeline. Jiugong Tunnel, located on Little Kinmen (Lieyu), is one of the island’s largest and most impressive military fortifications.

Built in 1965, Jiugong Tunnel was designed to safely transport food, ammunition, and military supplies from the coastline to the interior of the island, protecting logistics from Chinese artillery attacks. The tunnel cuts through granite and stretches 790 meters long, with a height of 11.5 meters, forming a unique twin T-shape with four separate exits.

Strategically located in the southeastern coastal area of Little Kinmen, the tunnel connected a harbor to inland military facilities — a remarkable example of Taiwan’s Cold War-era defense strategies.
