A groundbreaking study from UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography has revealed that over 90% of freshwater game fish in Southern California are infected with parasitic flatworms—trematodes that can infect humans. These parasites, Haplorchis pumilio and Centrocestus formosanus, are known to cause gastrointestinal illness, fatigue, and in rare cases, serious complications like heart attacks and strokes.
The parasites were likely introduced to U.S. waters via an invasive snail species and have now spread to at least 17 states. Researchers examined common fish like largemouth bass and bluegill from San Diego lakes and found them widely infected—sometimes carrying thousands of parasites per fish.
The good news? Proper cooking or freezing can eliminate the risk entirely. But a social media analysis found that 65% of popular fishing and cooking videos fail to mention safety guidelines, potentially putting millions at risk.
This video breaks down what the study found, how these parasites are spreading, what you need to do to protect yourself, and why public health awareness is critical right now.
Don’t let a delicious catch turn into a health risk. Watch, learn, and share to stay safe and informed.
