A playthrough of Tradewest's 1993 action game for the Sega Game Gear, Battletoads.
Battletoads was brought to the Sega Game Gear in late 1993 by Arc System Works. It's a pared back adaptation of the Sega Genesis version released eight months prior, which in turn was an enhanced 16-bit remake of Rare's 1991 NES game ( • Battletoads (NES) Playthrough ).
When viewed as a portable version of the Genesis game, Battletoads is quite a respectable piece of work. It's bright and colorful, the stage layouts have been tweaked to avoid screen crunch, there's plenty of parallax scrolling in the background layer, and the controls are usually snappy. The framerate is lower, a few stages were removed, the collision detection is less precise, and the cutscenes were left on the cutting room floor, but those were the sorts of compromises you'd have expected from any Genesis-to-Game Gear adaptation.
But when compared to the original NES game, the Game Gear's Battletoads is somewhat less impressive. The NES version had twelve stages, an animated intro, cutscenes between stages, an ending, digitized sound effects, and it ran at 60 fps. The Game Gear version, on the other hand, had just nine stages, no intro, no cutscenes, no ending, PSG-based sound effects, the scrolling is choppier, and it's a little buggy. (Notice how I had no choice but to off myself in stage four after a flag failed to trigger and the game left me stranded?)
The Game Gear was a more capable piece of hardware than the NES, and both games shipped on two megabit cartridges, so you'd expect Sega's handheld to deliver an experience that's at least on par with the NES game. It doesn't, but that's not to say that Battletoads on Game Gear is a bad game. Just a disappointing one.
