Riding the South Shore Line (Chicago, South Shore & South Bend RR, Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District/NICTD) through E 11th St in Michigan City, Indiana.
This is the last section of street-running on the last electric interurban railway in the country. The street trackage starts on the west side of town just past the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, and continues down the middle of two city streets, to the South Shore Line/NICTD/SouthShore Freight diesel and electric shops, yard and offices, with one intermediate stop in the downtown area on 11th St.
Speed through this section never quite gets above 25 mph, and local drivers are well-accustomed to trains running in the middle of the street. City, county and state leaders have been trying for decades to re-locate the interurban to off-street trackage on the north side of town, to no avail (so far!)
Enjoy!
