When Canadian military commanders ordered Corporal Leo Major to wait for artillery bombardment before approaching Zwolle, they told him one man couldn't clear a city held by 300-500 German soldiers. Leo Major—fighting with one eye after a phosphorus grenade destroyed the other—refused to wait for artillery that would kill 50,000 Dutch civilians and reduce their city to rubble. On the night of April 13th, 1945, he infiltrated Zwolle alone, spent eight hours convincing German forces they were facing an entire Canadian division through chaos and psychological warfare, and forced the Wehrmacht garrison to retreat by dawn without firing a single artillery shell. When he returned to find the city liberated and intact, he'd accomplished what every commander said was tactically impossible. A week later when offered the Distinguished Conduct Medal, Leo Major refused it—his second refusal of the same medal—because he didn't respect the commander presenting it. One soldier with absolute conviction proved that sometimes the most sophisticated military strategy is refusing orders when those orders mean innocent people die.
What do you think? Should soldiers have the right to refuse orders they believe will cause unnecessary civilian casualties? Share your thoughts respectfully below.
