Hollie Tatnell was born into slavery in Hearne, TX in 1859. When she died in 1911, she was buried in the all-black cemetery in town, which had initially been a slave cemetery.
In 1947, developers purchased the cemetery land and requested that all the individuals be dug up and moved, so they could build a neighborhood. Hollie’s children, Georgia and Andrew, were the only ones that refused.
So the developers built a median and a road around Hollie’s grave and continued with their plans for the neighborhood. And Hollie now lies permanently in the middle of a residential street in Hearne, TX.
