Описание: Animals first make it to land as "cryptic" communities hiding in wet soils. Early communities of arthropods had detritivores and predators but no herbivores directly eating the plants. These strange communities reflect how hard it is to eat plants--animals have to deal with all the woody material and cellulose in plants--a situation that took 175 million years before true vegetarians evolved.
