New Caledonia is a beautiful country to visit, It’s a French territory in the middle of the pacific ocean, and it’s only 3 hours fly to the east from Sydney, Australia. Qantas has daily flights from Sydney to New Caledonia, and it’s a pleasant flight, and the views when approaching New Caledonia are spectacular.

Public transport and tax is not that convenient here, and Noumea city centre is 50 kms away, plus you will need the car to drive around the island, so hiring a car is more economical and sensible things to do.

As soon as we arrived, we realized something essential is missing, Australia Vodafone network doesn’t work here. And it’s easter long weekend, no shops open, and we can not get a local sim card.

Our first stop is the cruise ship terminal, with plenty of nice restaurants right in front of the water.
Noumea city is not big, but it’s neat and tidy, and very clean. I could not resist and I have to fly the drone to take some beautiful footages to share with you.

There are Hilton Hotel, Chateau Royal Beach Resort, or Le Meridian Hotel. We choose to stay at the le meridian resort, which is located at the south side of Noumea city, directly on Anse Vata Bay, right at the lagoon front.

In my opinion, the hotel is a bit dated and looks a bit old and tired. Let me quickly show our room. The room is good size, and it has a balcony. its facing the garden, and it’s not a bad idea for fresh air. Breakfast restaurant is located in the garden area, right next to the swimming pool, it’s included in our package.

The swimming pool is very stylish, right next to the beach, the sunbeds and shades make the swimming pool very attractive, a great relaxing place for family travellers like us.

There are only 100,000 people living in Noumea, and the city is very much spread out, the traffic is very relax, compare to Sydney where we live, it’s in bare minimum traffic here, and the road is so beautiful, driving along the coastline, it just makes you feel so good, and so enjoyable.

Kari Veo is a must visit spot, it’s on top of Bird Hill, where they are building an education centre, called Kari Veo, it means under the stars.

Tjibaou culture centre is also a must visit, it’s located only 15 mins drive from the city centre.
Designed by Italian Architect Renzo Piano, completed in 1998, in honour of New Caledonia political leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou who was assassinated in 1989.

Tjibaou culture centre is not only a centre showcase the rich Kanak culture and its history, but also an agriculture market with lot of fresh local produce.

Anse vata beach is a popular hotspot for visitors to Noumea, only 10 mins drive from the city centre, this area has hotels, shopping, restaurants and other attractions.

The sunset over the ocean horizon is just magnificent and unbelievable, I can now imagine what the sunset in Perth Australia is like.

So how expensive to visit New Caledonia. Well, I can definitely tell you it’s a bit more expensive than Australia. Two bottles of beer, one pizza and a bowl of salad, could cost you $120 Australian dollars.

If you are looking for a fine dinning experience, well don’t expect too much in Noumea. We tried a few restaurants along the Anse Vata beach, to be honest, I find that their food and services are not that impressive.

This stone grilled restaurant looks nice, we like to try it out. The service is bit slow. Eventually we got out food, very excited to try these new things. But we were left very disappointed as the beef were very chuey.

However we did eventually found this fine dinning restaurant Alinea based on the hotel guest recommendation.

Once you walked in, its pleasantly surprised, great ambience in a beautiful garden setting.
We had a great time in New Caledonia, but before you come here, please learn some basic French, and don’t forget to bring fat wallet, as everything is very expensive here.
