On November 15, 2018, Billy was admitted to Kennestone for coronary artery bypass surgery to improve blood flow to his heart. The procedure itself was completed on November 19, 2018, but in the days that followed, his post-operative care team made a critical decision: despite safer alternatives, they placed Billy on heparin, a drug known to carry a tenfold higher risk of causing a life-threatening complication called Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia (HIT)
.
Billy began to show textbook warning signs of HIT, including a sudden and dangerous drop in platelets, nosebleeds, and cardiac insufficiency. By November 24–25, his platelet count had plummeted, yet his medical team failed to take the two basic required steps: stop all heparin and start an alternative anticoagulant. Heparin was discontinued, but no alternative anticoagulant was given
.
On the morning of November 26, 2018, Billy went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead. His autopsy revealed an acute myocardial infarction caused by a thrombosis in his bypass graft, the direct result of untreated HIT. Post-mortem testing confirmed the diagnosis, showing HIT at levels nearly nine times the normal threshold.
.
⚖️ This lawsuit, brought by Kathy Saunier on behalf of her late husband, seeks justice and accountability, shining a light on how medical professionals ignored a well-known, easily treatable complication until it was too late.
