As the sport prepares for the 2026 regulations, questions are growing about how the rules are being interpreted, especially amid rumors that Mercedes and Red Bull may have pushed the compression ratio beyond the current 16:1 limit, possibly up to 18:1.

Honda have made it clear they are not accusing any rivals of wrongdoing. Instead, their position is simple and firm: the FIA must clearly define what is legal and what is not. With the first winter tests in Barcelona approaching at the end of January, teams are entering a crucial phase, where early development choices could shape the competitive order for years to come.

Engines are expected to be the main focus during testing, even more than outright lap times. Ferrari were the first to formally raise concerns with the FIA, and now Honda have aligned themselves with the Italian team following their technical presentation in Tokyo.

Honda executive Koji Watanabe explained that this is the first year of a completely new set of regulations, where interpretation plays a huge role. While Honda want to fully respect the rules, they believe some areas remain unclear. According to Watanabe, interpretation is part of racing, but it is ultimately the FIA’s responsibility to draw firm boundaries.
