What's up with the Finnish enclave in America? The Finns are probably seen as one of the most unusual Europeans in the modern day, their language is divergent from almost every other one in Europe and they have a number of strange customs and traditions, some of which have actually become mainstream globally, so this nation certainly punches above it’s weight in terms of influence. How did large numbers of Finns settle in North America? During the late 19th century when Finland was under the control of the Russian Empire, the Finnish people were largely rural and impoverished and wished to find a better life overseas and hence many made the journey across the Ocean to settle in a region of America quite similar to their home nation. Finns settled all around Lake Superior, namely the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (where they make up a third of the population), parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Thunder Bay, Ontario. Smaller numbers of Finns settled on the West Coast and other regions of the country. They are a part of the large Scandinavian presence in the region although they have largely assimilated into mainstream American culture. Thanks for watching.
