The Vanderkloof Dam is a hydro-electric dam on the Orange River. The regime of the dam periodically releases water during the peak energy consumption hours. The typical cycle consists of two releases daily, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. In the summer, the releases trigger spawning behavior in Cyprinidae. This video shows some of the Labeobarbus aeneus (Smallmouth Yellowfish) spawning activity at a rapid downstream of the dam.
Once the daily floodwaters recede many fish are trapped in isolated pools, often becoming desiccated along with the laid eggs.
