If you live in Durham Region, be careful what you say — even a joke could land you under scrutiny. The region’s website lists “offensive jokes” as a form of hate or discrimination that can be reported through its community-based hate reporting program.
Pickering Ward 1 Councillor Lisa Robinson joins Marc Patrone to explain why the anonymous reporting system risks being abused — diverting resources away from serious crimes and creating a culture of fear.
Robinson, who has gone nearly two years without pay after clashing with council colleagues, argues the program could be used to target political opponents and chill free expression.
