The 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season was an active, destructive and deadly season that was the deadliest and costliest since 2005. The season was the first on record to have at least 1 major hurricane from July to November: Bertha in July, Gustav in August, Ike in September, Omar in October and Paloma in November, and one of 7 Seasons to have a major hurricane before August, (The others being 1916, 1926, 1957, 1966, 1996, 2005 and 2024) and one of 7 to have a major hurricane in November (The others being 1912, 1932, 1985, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2016 and 2020). The season started 1 day early on May 31st with the development of Tropical Storm Arthur, having come from the remnants of Tropical Storm Alma in the Eastern Pacific. June passed by with no storms forming at all, the first since 2004 to not have a single storm during the month. July featured Hurricane Bertha, the first major hurricane in July since Hurricane Emily in 2005, and the longest lived hurricane on record during the month, with 2 more storms, Tropical Storm Cristobal scraping past North Carolina, and Hurricane Dolly, the first storm since Claudette 2003 to strike Texas as a hurricane. August featured 4 storms, with Gustav and Hanna becoming Hurricanes, and Gustav becoming a major hurricane. Gustav and Hanna both devastated Haiti, with Gustav going on to sweep past Cuba and strike Louisiana, the first hurricane to strike the state since Katrina in 2005, and Hanna would head northwards towards North Carolina. 3 more storms formed in September: Hurricane Ike, Tropical Storm Josephine and Hurricane Kyle. Ike would sweep by Haiti and Cuba, the 2nd major hurricane to strike the Island in the year after Gustav, and would become the strongest hurricane to strike Texas in the 21st Century until Hurricane Harvey in 2017. It was also the strongest landfall in Texas since Hurricane Bret 9 years prior in 1999. Hurricane Kyle would make a landfall in Nova Scotia as a fully tropical hurricane, the first in exactly 5 years since Hurricane Juan in 2003. October brought about 3 storms: Tropical Storms Marco and Nana, and Major Hurricane Omar. Tropical Storm Marco was the smallest tropical cyclone on record at 11 miles across, breaking the old record from Tiny Cyclone Tracy in 1974. Omar was a powerful Category 4 storm which swept through the Virgin Islands and moved in a west to east fashion like Hurricane Lenny in November 1999. The last storm, Hurricane Paloma, struck the Southern side of Cuba, and would eventually dissipate on November 14th, about 2 weeks before the official end of the season. The season finished with 16 named storms, 8 hurricanes and 5 major hurricanes, making the 2008 season, at the time, tied for the 9th most active on record, behind 2005, 1933, 1887, 1995, 1969 and 1936, with 1949, 1950, 1954 and 2003. It would be surpassed by a flurry of other seasons, currently sitting in 14th since 1950. The accumulated cyclone energy of the season was also the most in 3 years, since 2005 at 146, double the previous 2 years, and almost more than what both 2006 and 2007 had combined.
This Atlantic Hurricane Season naming list was previously used in 2002, with the exceptions of Ike and Laura, which replaced Isidore and Lili. The names Ike, Omar and Paloma were used for the first (and in the cases of Ike and Paloma, only) time. Laura was previously used under the Pre-1979 rosters in 1971. The names that received 2nd uses were: Cristobal (Replaced Cesar), Fay (Replaced Fran) and Hanna (Replaced Hortense). Due to the heavy impact of the storms throughout the season, the named Gustav, Ike and Paloma were all retired, and replaced with Gonzalo, Isaias and Paulette for 2014. Gonzalo would be the only new name used in 2014, while the other two would be used in 2020. Despite the heavy damage and destruction caused by Hanna in Haiti, the name was not retired after the season.
