People love the MP5… and we’re going to talk about why in this National Shooting Sports Month video.
This time, I’m joined by one of the founders of the Liberal Gun Owners club, Randy Miyan. He’s got a thing for the MP5… and I’ve got a couple of MP5 Clones. So, we got together on the range for him to have some fun with their awesomeness and share thoughts on why this personal defense weapon has captivated the general gun owning public and why it spent decades as a top choice amongst elite military and law enforcement professionals around the globe. The gun has also been featured in countless action movies and TV shows over the past several decades as well, which has given it significant pop culture status.
Originally developed by H&K in the 1960’s and issued to various German government forces almost immediately, the company accumulated contracts with scores of special operations teams around mainland Europe, Great Britain and the United States. By the 1980’s it was probably in more elite inventories than any other model of firearm. H&K did develop an expensive semi-auto (SP89, et al) for the civilian market after the restriction on new Fully Automatic Firearms went into place under the Reagan Administration in 1986. Today, buying a transferable fully automatic one will cost you as much as a nice new car or truck.
Thankfully, over the last several years the MP5 Clone market in the United States has exploded, with Century Arms probably becoming the leader in regard to model options and quality for the price. In this video, we shoot their AP5 pistol model, both suppressed and raw.
I also gave Randy a chance to shoot my 10 year old Daughter’s .22lr MP5 clone… which she got as a present on her 5th Birthday.
The MP5 is a decently ergonomic gun to shoot, with a decent trigger, but a hard to use safety/selector lever. It’s a bit on the heavy side by modern standards, but that weight is combined with the legendary roller-delayed recoil system to make it a very controllable gun to shoot. It has an AK style paddle magazine release and requires some fine motor work to get reloaded, as well as the manipulation of the bolt handle (often SLAPPED for effect). So, with all those less than optimal things, we can see why it has been replaced in most professional circles by more evolved PDWs or (in most cases) intermediate caliber rifles with short barrels.
All that said, it has an amazing COOL Factor that can’t be denied… and The People love it.
Is there a gun that you really think is COOL even though it is outdated?
Let us know in the comments if you own and MP5 (H&K or clone) and why you love it.
