The original 8-hour performance in Kannada (also adapted and directed by Prakash Belawadi for Mysore Rangayana), did a total of 57 shows, with audiences standing up to applaud for 15 minutes after each performance. The previous runs of this English version in October 2023 and May 2024 saw 6 shows, and elated, emotional reviews.

Dr SL Bhyrappa believes Parva is his greatest novel: “It is 20 percent The Mahabharata, and 80 percent mine,” he says. In the novel, he manages to achieve intimacy with the characters caught in the conflicts of power, lust, love, and war, but also maintains a critical distance as the narrator. Parva is startling in its intellectual and emotional clarity.

Parva is about human struggles in obliging ourselves even as we are conflicted by our duties to the world we inhabit – to family and friends, to rulers and the ruled. PARVA is Bhyrappa’s interpretation of The Mahabharata, without miracle or divine intervention, as timeless as the epic and always urgent, here and now.
