Описание: Lower nitrates with bio pellet reactor update - rotter tube reef. I stopped sugar dosing to lower nitrates to give the bio pellet reactor another chance. the bio pellet reactor has been running for 2 months now and i have not dosed sugar in 2 weeks. I would normally dose 1 teaspoon sugar for every 60 gallons, making it 2 teaspoons a day for my 125 gallon aquarium. the sugar would be placed directly in the sump each night. it lowers nitrates very well by providing a carbon source for the anaerobic bacteria to eat. the bio pellets churning in the bio pellet reactor provide a carbon source as well but it takes a few months for them to kick in. hopefully in another month or two they will be in full force. of course, nothing substitutes good water changes and sand vacuuming. you need to keep up on cleaning your aquarium so the nitrates don't get out of control. fish waste such as urine and solids and uneaten food break down and rot in your tank. this is the first stage in the cycle of your aquarium. this is ammonia. ammonia breaks down into nitrites from the bacteria in your tank. those nitrites break down into nitrates. nitrates aren't too bad for fish but they can't be higher than 5 if you have corals. it's best to keep them around 5 with corals, or a little less. you need a protein skimmer when using carbon dosing such as bio pellets, sugar, vodka or white vinegar.
