THE STORY:
Chuck Berry wrote this about himself, thinly disguised. The "country boy" from Louisiana who "never ever learned to read or write so well, but he could play a guitar just like ringing a bell" was Chuck's own story. Originally the lyrics said "colored boy" but Berry changed it to "country boy" so it would get radio play in the segregated 1950s.

The song's opening guitar riff is arguably the most famous in rock history. Keith Richards said, "I lifted every lick he ever played." John Lennon said, "If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it Chuck Berry." The song reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1958.

In 1986, "Johnny B. Goode" became the first rock and roll song inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked it #7 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

THE STORY:
Chuck Berry wrote this song about his sister Lucy, who would hog the family piano to practice classical music while Chuck wanted to play boogie-woogie. The song became a manifesto for rock and roll - literally telling Beethoven and Tchaikovsky to get out of the way because a new sound was taking over.

"Roll over, Beethoven, and tell Tchaikovsky the news" wasn't just a clever line - it was a declaration of war against the musical establishment. In 1956, this was revolutionary. Rock and roll was considered low-class, dangerous, and temporary. Chuck Berry was saying: no, this is the future.

The Beatles covered it in 1963 (with George Harrison on lead vocals), introducing Chuck Berry to a whole new generation. The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) turned it into a #6 hit in 1973 by actually incorporating Beethoven's Fifth Symphony into the arrangement.
