16mm home movie footage of the London docks, the River Thames, Freighters Thames Barges and the paddle Steamer Gordon Crossing the Thames.
In 1884 the Metropolitan Board of Works (LCC) agreed to provide two steam-powered ferries the Gordon and Duncan each costing £10,650 with engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette leading the design and construction. The service was officially opened on 23rd March 1889, with the paddle steamer Gordon named after General Gordon of Khartoum. Both vessels powered by a condensing steam engine manufactured by John Peen of Greenwich producing about 100hp.
