(17 Mar 2020) Ahead of an expected surge in coronavirus cases, President Donald Trump is moving to blunt the impact of the pandemic on the U.S. economy, fundamentally altered by a push for a nation to stay home.
As the global markets fluctuated amid fears of a recession, the president conferred with travel industry executives at the White House and had calls with restaurant leaders, retailers and suppliers.
"We know that your industry is among the hardest hit by the economic impact of the virus. Our goal is to beat the virus," Trump said to the industry leader in the Cabinet Room.
His administration is expected to propose a roughly $850 billion emergency economic stimulus to address the free-fall while considering checks to American workers trying to make their way in an economy deeply unsettled by the outbreak.
Asked about his advice to employees furloughed during the economic contraction brought on by the coronavirus epidemic: Be patient, the president said.
"We'll be bigger, stronger than ever before and it won't take that long," Trump insisted.
Several of the companies represented at the White House have furloughed tens of thousands of employees as they've closed hotels, casinos and theme parks
For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as a fever and cough.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
The vast majority of people recover from the new virus.
