A lot of recent progress on this road with the dynamic duo of Andy Jackson and Phillip Crawshaw exploring and excavating several sections corroborating the line established using Lidar. Great to have the route confirmed.
Probably their biggest success was establishing the crossing point of Artle Beck in Caton. They found road stones in both the south and north banks fixing the road line and pinning down the precise find spot of famous Artle Beck milestone. This is the milestone that gives the first letter of the Roman name for Lancaster – it started with “L”.
We start in Lancaster and head up the south side of the River Lune through Caton, Hornby and Melling before reaching the site of Burrow Roman fort. We finish with a circle of the fort there and final look back to Lancaster and Morecambe Bay.
