An ocean liner becomes a floating microcosm of 1933 society as passengers journey from Mexico to pre-Nazi Germany, each carrying their own prejudices, secrets, and illusions about the world that's about to change forever. Dr. Wilhelm Schumann (Oskar Werner), the ship's ailing physician, falls for the enigmatic drug-addicted countess La Condesa (Simone Signoret), while bitter divorcée Mary Treadwell (Vivien Leigh in her final film) grapples with aging, and idealistic Jewish salesman Julius Lowenthal (Heinz Rühmann) remains tragically optimistic about Germany's future.
