What is Phonics Friends?
Learning to read is a very challenging thing for any child to do. Research has shown that one way to help children learn to read much faster is the systematic teaching of phonics. This involves learning the sounds in English and their relationship with letters, as well as the various skills needed to successfully read.
The big challenge is that English is one of the hardest languages to learn how to read. There are 26 letters and about 44 sounds in English. However, there are over a thousand different combinations of those letters used in English to represent those 44 sounds!
Phonics Friends is a phonics system designed to make this complexity as manageable and easy to approach as possible. It does this in several ways.
Sounds First
Research has shown that English is much more straightforward if it is taught from a ‘sounds first, letters second’ perspective. Take letter ‘a’, for example: in ‘apple’, ‘want’, ‘ball’, ‘father’ and ‘about’, the letter ‘a’ represents 5 different sounds. However, the sound /a/ (as in apple) is only represented by the letter ‘a’. Phonics Friends takes a ‘sounds first’ approach to make learning to read easier.
Faces and Letters, Not Just Letters
The main way Phonics Friends does this is by using faces that represent each of the sounds. These faces are easy to remember and, for young learners who are not familiar with letters, much more relatable than the abstract letter symbols they will use when they are older. The use of faces allows difficult concepts to be approached in much more understandable ways.
The use of faces and letters makes the complexities in English much simpler for children to deal with and can help children with some of the hardest challenges children face in learning to read.
