Black 5 45212 was at the head of the 12 coach Northern Belle Settle & Carlisle Steam Special as it passes through Whalley station and crosses Whalley Arches on its way to Preston. The station viaduct marks the start of a 4.5 mile climb (1/82) and the viaduct has a speed restriction of 20mph.
In gathering darkness a dew begins to fall causing 45212 to slip as she leaves the viaduct and crosses the nearby A666. Once she has "regained her feet" the steady exhaust beat continued for a further 3 minutes as she slogged up the hill.
