Filmed on July 22, 2022, on a journey to Canglong Island (home to Hubei Institute of Fine Arts) in southeastern Wuhan.
The sky that day possessed a dreamy, “Hayao Miyazaki-esque” quality, with low-hanging cumulus clouds and abundant light casting an animated filter over the landscape. Passing by Tangxun Lake, the largest urban lake in Asia, its expansive waters and the wetland scenery of the Jiangxia area together define the gentle, bright geographical character of southeastern Wuhan.
Names like Jiangxia, Tangxun Lake, and Canglong Island hold histories far older than “Wuhan” itself. They are not merely “incorporated by urban expansion” but the natural extension of the fabric of this “City of a Hundred Lakes.” This exploration feels like a reverse archaeology: starting from a modern art institute, crossing lakes, and ultimately arriving at the older, more constant names and breath of this land. Where do we begin to know a city? Perhaps, it lies in driving towards its seemingly “peripheral” new districts and, there, through the most dreamlike sky, recognizing its most ancient geographical genes.
