Snowdon RHYD DDU Path and South Ridge Solo Hike | Walk Wales

Описание: A solo hike up one of Snowdon's best routes via the Snowdon Rhyd Ddu path and down by the South ridge (Allt Meanderyn). The Snowdon Rhyd Ddu path is certainly one of Snowdon's best routes to encounter less people on the way up and down. This Snowdonia Rhyd Ddu path hike starts out from a layby on a country lane (B4418) close to the main Rhyd Ddu car park. The Mount Snowdon or Yr Wyddfa summit is the highest point in Wales.

The Rhyd Ddu path up to Snowdon starts out from the main car park. The charges at the car park are £6 all day or £3 for 4 hours at the time this hike was done. There are also toilet facilities at the car park. You get to the start of the Rhyd Ddu path by walking past the toilets until you come to a gate that allows you to cross over the miniature railway line.

Once over the railway line head up a well developed gravel path and past the remains of the Ffridd slate quarry. Following this path you will eventually come to a fork where you head left through the gate. Later on you will be coming down the other path on the way back.

The path is a gentle slope at first but then steepens as you clamber up the rocky shoulder of Llechog Ridge. Keeping to the path, head east along the ridge, through the gate, and towards the highest point where the South Ridge and Bwlch Main connect. The narrow ridge of Bwlch Main is not a difficult ridge but it is still a little exposed with steep slopes either side. You will need a bit of a head for heights here.

Once over Bwlch Main the path rises again and joins the Watkin Path, marked by a large stone for the final 200m climb to the summit. From here follow a rugged path towards the summit building walking directly past it and up the steps to reach the summit cairn. Here you will no doubt be greeted by lots of people and a queue if you go at peak time.

The descent follows the exact same route as the ascent until you take a left turn down to the South ridge Allt Meanderyn. When descending head towards the base of Yr Aran where you will take a left back to Rhyd Ddu. The South Ridge has a fairly well marked path with a couple of tricky scramble sections to negotiate.

After taking a left at the base of Yr Aran this will take you through the old Bwlch Cwm y Llan slate quarry. Follow this well developed path down until it eventually meets up with the path you was on earlier when you took the left through the gate. From here it's a matter of just retracing your steps back down. The walk took me just over 5 hours including stops and walking an extra mile or so to and from the country lane at the start and end.
