I’m playing a song by one of my bands, for a change. We’re about to premier a new single and music video this month, and later this year, Original Sharks will be releasing a new EP, my first with the band. I love how this band flows through long-winding guitar and vocal melodies on top while the rhythm section is almost constantly modulating underneath. And it makes the moments we decide to repeat something or finally deliver a hook we’ve been hinting at stand out even more. And we’ve become quite adept at using slight tempo & feel changes to sculpt and shape this restless style into something that feels breathable rather than manic.
I often describe Original Sharks as “early Saves The Day with more parts, shorter songs, and Coheed-y guitar leads.” This song is a prime example and an absolute fav of mine. You can find it on OG Sharks’ “Hundred Grand to the Man” EP, produced by another bandmate, Jon Markson (Drug Church, Drain, Such Gold). But this one was actually recorded before my time. Shout out Dan Garmon, who got so in-demand as a Broadway & off-Broadway pianist/music director, he had to tag me in.
